What is a Merchant Account?

A Merchant Account is a contract where a acquiring bank extends a line of credit to a merchant, who wishes to accept credit cards a method of payment in their business. A merchant must apply for a Merchant Account and without having such a contract a merchant cannot accept credit cards.

Because Merchant Accounts are thought as a line of credit or a short term loan by Banks, merchants must show a good credit history to get approval. Not all merchants can qualify for a merchant account, sometimes due to their credit other times it has to do with their specific business model.
